Book Review: In the United States of America, gun violence is unfortunately a widespread occurrence, it has been declared a humanitarian crisis and yet the government is lagging in implementing strict measures. The reason for gun violence is majorly the difference between Law Enforcement and Communities (according to Google).
Day One is fiction, thriller, and riveting, it hits the
right marks, provokes a thought in its reader, most probably a sensitive issue
for many, and lastly, it is as hooking as a thriller can be. The story is set
in a small town- Stonesmere, where traditions go on for generations, neighbors
know all about everyone’s family, a celebration is for all to celebrate, a
tragedy for all to contain, and when a town like this faces a massive public
attack, the losses, the tragedies, the grief; that should be faced together,
comes crumbling down.
It is an absolutely nail-biting, indulging, often heartbreaking, mostly honest, and captivating book. The title does justice to the story- ‘Day One’ is an event in school, the day when the shooting happened. How ‘One Day’ can turn your life upside down in an instant, and Marty didn’t only face the grief that struck her unexpectedly but she also had to keep facing media, people, and Leah, and keep feeding them lies with the invisible chains oiled up in guilt tied around her heart.
Characters: Marty is the perfect girl, she studied and stayed in this
small town, overshadowed by her over-enthusiastic father and saintly mother,
who has become the best teacher in town even after being an outsider.
There’s a
friend, Leah, who keeps secrets, remains quiet, and supports her no matter
what. So, when Marty said that she was there, in the hall when the attack
happened, she saw her mum protecting the children and dying in that process;
everyone believed her except Leah, but she did nothing about it.
A boy named Trent, who lives with his mother and her
boyfriend, craves stability like the people of Stonesmere, he has been part of
this town years ago for a brief period, and now this incident grabs his
attention even deeper. Trent doesn’t believe the girl on TV who’s claiming to
be present during the shooting, he is looking beyond that grief-stricken face
and thus, he starts digging. What comes at last is shocking, unexpected, and
yet makes complete sense.
